Prime Minister Robert Abela and Finance Minister Clyde Caruana are allowing the Film Commissioner, Johann Grech, to squander millions of the people’s money while they take no action, the Nationalist Party said in a statement on Monday.

Nationalist MPs Julie Zahra and Graham Bencini said that Abela and Caruana are complicit in the Film Commissioner’s acts and expenditure, which the PN MPs said is all done with the aim of fulfilling the Commissioner’s ego and personal interests.

The PN said that Grech, “with the blessing of Abela and Caruana, is squandering millions of the people’s money”.

Zahra and Bencini said that various artists, producers, and artists’ associations have given comments over the past days which make it evident that the Film Commissioner does not have the faith of the industry behind him.

The PN continued that with all of this in mind, it is holding Abela and Caruan accountable “for the inaction which is allowing the Maltese and Gozitan people to be stolen from by the millions … whilst local artists and others in the sector remain without any assistance.”

The MPs concluded the statement by saying that they would like to give a reminder that the PN has requested an investigation from the Auditor General regarding how the Film Commission, under the leader of Johann Grech, “is squandering the people’s money”.
