Ivan Falzon will be stepping down as the CEO of Malta’s roads agency Infrastructure Malta, The Malta Independent is informed.
Sources said that there was a mutual agreement between Falzon and the Transport Ministry, which is led by Chris Bonett for the former to step down from his post.
The roads agency has been in the spotlight over traffic caused by uncoordinated road works across the country, although it completed several major projects such as the Mriehel underpass, airport flyover project, and the reconstruction of arterial roads in Pembroke, Ghadira and Cirkewwa under Falzon’s tenure.
Falzon however found himself in the middle of a more recent roads controversy, as he labeled a proposal for new plans for the Msida Creek junction as a “photoshop exercise” which would prolong commutes. The plans were proposed by the Chamber of Architects at the eleventh hour, leaving Infrastructure Malta questioning their timing as work on the project was about to begin.
It is understood, however, that the agreement for Falzon to step down preceded the Msida flyover debacle.
Falzon was appointed as Infrastructure Malta CEO in July 2022 by then-Transport Minister Aaron Farrugia, who has since been relegated to the backbenches and replaced by Bonett. He previously served as CEO of the Water Services Corporation and Mater Dei Hospital.
