Bernard Grech calls on Parliament to urgently convene to discuss Edward Scicluna’s position

Opposition Leader Bernard Grech has called on Parliament, which is currently in its summer recess, to convene with urgency to discuss the position of Central Bank Governor Edward Scicluna.

In a statement on Thursday, Grech wrote to the Speaker of the House Anglu Farrugia requesting an urgent parliamentary sitting to discuss the circumstances regarding Scicluna's decision not to step down from his positions as Governor of the Central Bank of Malta and Member of the Board of Governors of the Malta Financial Services Authority (MFSA).

On Wednesday, a court found enough prima facie evidence for Scicluna, and others to be indicted in the hospitals case after being charged in connection to it.

Scicluna has remained defiant in the face of calls for his resignation, despite the court decree, saying that the EU Treaty is protecting him as a Eurosystem Governor from the pressures he has been facing, namely by the PN, as well as Abela who indicated that Scicluna would arrive to the right decision.

In his letter to the Speaker, Grech said that under these circumstances, Parliament should demand and ensure that seriousness and accountability prevail in the country's institutions, and that no personal interest overrides the national interest.

Grech reiterated that despite more than a day having passed since the court's decree, Scicluna has not only failed to step down from his positions, but has even informed the delegates of the Labour Party that he will remain in his positions for political reasons. "Scicluna is refusing to do what is expected of him under the circumstances and, at the same time, he is ignoring the Prime Minister. For the Opposition, this is unacceptable and shows a lack of serious and strong leadership in our country," Grech said.

He said that since Parliament can meet urgently if there is agreement between both sides of the House, he requested the Speaker to urgently communicate with Leader of the House Owen Bonnici, so that the PN's request reaches the government, and the necessary coordination is made for the urgent convening of Parliament.
