Edward Scicluna should resign from his post as Governor of the Central Bank of Malta as soon as possible and be replaced by someone independent of any political party with the necessary credentials to uphold Malta's reputation, the Nationalist Party said in a statement on Monday.
Graham Bencini, a PN MP, said that although almost a week has passed since Scicluna was put under indictment in connection with "the robbery of the hospitals", he still remains as the Governor of the Central Bank "with great damage to the country's reputation".
The PN said that it hopes Prime Minister Robert Abela and Scicluna are not meeting behind closed doors and forming some sort of "golden handshake" paid off the backs of the Maltese and Gozitan people.
Bencini said that PN Leader Bernard Grech said that the Cabinet needs to do what is right and act responsibly, as the country's reputation is facing the repercussions from the lack of action by the government.
The Opposition said that Scicluna has not only refused to resign as Governor but is insisting that he is not ready to give up. The PN referred to how Times of Malta published a message sent by Scicluna, "where he declared that he would only resign if found guilty of a crime and that he would not fall to the pressure of the Nationalist Party Leader."
Bencini remarked that Abela has as of yet not taken any responsibility to officially call for Scicluna's resignation. He added that Abela must ensure the safeguarding of the country's reputation.
