Identità Agency remains ‘committed to conducting necessary investigations’ following allegations

Friday, 2 August 2024, 14:26 Last update: about 2 months ago

The Identità Agency has said that it remains committed to conducting necessary verifications and investigations following recent allegations filed in a court application by lawyer Jason Azzopardi.

The application alleges, among other things, that a police inspector was transferred to another department while planning to arraign top political officials on charges of masterminding a racket. The racket allegedly saw the issuing of an estimated 18,000 Maltese ID cards to third country nationals on the basis of fake documentation and false declarations.

The Agency made reference to a statement it issued on 15 July. On 15 July, the agency Identità had categorically denied that it issued thousands of ID cards to foreign nationals in an illegal manner, saying that a story run by Nationalist Party media at the time was false. In response to a Net News report last that was published a day prior to that date, which alleged that Identità, formerly known as Identity Malta, had issued slews of identity (ID) cards to foreigners who were in Malta irregularly, the agency made it clear that ID cards are only issued to persons who have a Maltese nationality whilst foreigners who live and work in Malta are given a permission slip or document of residence that states the reason they are living in Malta.  Identità said that it was after an internal investigation by the Compliance Section and Expatriates Unit within the agency itself that it passed on information, with proof it found, regarding certain individuals to the police so that they may continue the investigations and take any necessary action prescribed by the law.

The Identità Agency, on 2 August following Azzopardi's application being filed in court, said that it takes any allegation, suspicion, or report that comes to its attention seriously, "especially in light of the reports that appeared today on local portals. This is why the agency strengthened its due diligence and compliance structures and fully cooperates with any investigation, as it is currently doing in investigations led by the Police Force."

"As it has done in the past, the Agency remains committed to conducting necessary verifications and investigations, both internally and externally, as permitted by law. In fact, the Agency reminds that following an internal investigation by the Compliance Section and the Expatriates Unit, information was passed on, including all evidence found regarding certain individuals, to the Police Force to continue investigations and take any action necessary according to the law.

The Identità Agency strongly sustains "that it does not tolerate any form of abuse, regardless of who commits it. It also reaffirms that it welcomes any investigation necessary and declares that, as it has done in the past, it will continue to cooperate with the Police to ensure the Agency's name remains untarnished. The Agency remains consistently committed to conducting necessary verifications and investigations as permitted by law."
