Mellieha has been reduced to being served by only three community police officers, Nationalist Party MP Ivan Castillo said in a video published on his Facebook page. He continued that he does not mean that there are three officers every day, but that there are actually "three in total".
Castillo said that this means there are shifts where there is only one officer present for all of Mellieha, "one of the largest localities in the country".
He said this as he was speaking outside of the Mellieha police station, which he showed was closed with no officers around. "The situation is a disgrace," the MP remarked. In his Facebook post, he said that there are days when there is only one officer for Mellieha, Manikata, Ghadira, Armier, and Selmun.
"What is worse than that, to add insult to injury, is that this one police officer is on their own trying to serve the needs of one of the largest towns while not even having a car, as they even took that," Castillo said, commenting that a police car is not provided to these police.
"Imagine this police having a case in Ghadira and having to get there quickly. They would either need to call someone to take them there if they are available, or they would have to take the bus... A situation which would be funny if it was not so depressing."
He said that Mellieha's situation is that just last year there were 176 cases of property damage, 130 cases of thefts, and 55 cases of domestic violence, "but the doors of Mellieha's police station remain closed".
He continued that this gets even worse during the summer, as Mellieha's population "almost triples" during this time of the year, yet there is still only one officer "who does not even have their own transport". Castillo commented that the situation is "ridiculous".
The MP said that police stations need to open, not just in Mellieha, but in every locality in Malta. He then asked Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri to speak out and say when these police stations will open.
"When will the Mellieha residents have the ability to come make a report when they need to? Nowadays, not only can they not go to St Paul's Bay, as even there it is closed, but they need to go to Qawra," Castillo concluded.
