'Every entity for which Byron Camilleri is responsible is tainted', Grech says

Every government entity for which Minister Byron Camilleri is responsible is tainted with scandal, PN leader Bernard Grech said on Friday.

Speaking on the party's media, Grech was referring to a number of scandalous allegations that have hit government entities that fall with the Home Affairs Minister's portfolio.

The most recent scandal emerged on Friday when former Nationalist MP Jason Azzopardi submitted a court application urging a magisterial inquiry to investigate an alleged multimillion euro racket involving top LESA officials, which, it is claimed, fraudulently transferred penalty points incurred by Maltese drivers onto cars which had been rented by tourists.

The minister is also under fire following allegations that Identita, the agency responsible for the issuance of ID cards, had fraudulently provided thousands of ID cards to foreigners, giving them addresses where they do not reside.

Prime Minister Robert Abela and Camilleri have denied any knowledge of what is allegedly happening at LESA.

Grech said that now is no longer the time to talk about accepting political responsibility, reminding his listeners of the many times that the PN sought Camilleri's resignation. "Now is the time for a clean slate," Grech said. A change of figureheads is no longer enough, what Malta needs is to turn the page.

"We need to understand the desperate reality that every sector in the country is now in." Grech said that a small group of people have taken over the running of the country.

Grech also spoke about Stephen Mangion, who died this week in Mater Dei Hospital's waiting room after complaining of severe chest pain.

This case shows how high the price of corruption is, as the government threw away millions of euros which could have been used for the upgrading of health services, including the refurbishment of St Luke's Hospital.

As the PN prepares to celebrate Independence Day, Grech said that it is importance that Malta regains independence from this criminal rule.
