YMCA receives 43 new cases of homeless and roofless individuals requiring emergency shelter each month, the organisation has said.
The organisation provided details, principally gathered from the first two quarters of 2024.
"166 of these were Maltese, 22 were EU nationals, and 71 were non-EU nationals," the YMCA said.
It said that 119 cases have been provided with shelter and care programmes through its 3 facilities, and 48 have successfully moved back into the community, the YMCA said.
"8,563 bed nights have been provided through these dates in our shelters. We provide care directly in the community, seeking to offer a safety net for those experiencing extreme poverty and either already sleeping rough, or at dire risk of falling into homelessness."
This work, it said, has included: 4,876 social work & other interventions carried out directly in the community - 560 individual service users have been supported in this way in the past 12 months; 180 active service users have been assisted in the past 3 months at our Drop-in Centre, of which 110 are roofless cases and 30 homeless cases. All are provided with bathing, laundry, cooking, internet and telephone facilities, food, and access to Social Work services."
YMCA said that it wants "to prevent the scourge of homelessness at its root by empowering young people at the earliest possible age. Through our youth work programme we teach them self-care, self-respect, and offer them extracurricular opportunities for personal and professional growth."
"We have facilitated the participation of 848 youths across the youth work programme with 33+ different activities; Participated in 1 International youth work exchange; Hosted 13 debates on youth topics and 1 public conference exposing young people to MEPs and EU elections; 15+ educational workshops, talks and seminars have been provided in the community; We have helped 65 active service users in counselling and psychotherapy with a total of 685 sessions provided through these dates; Published 2 research reports."
