Prime Minister Robert Abela, together with Minister for Social and Affordable Accommodation Roderick Galdes have inaugurated Dar il-Qawsalla, a residence dedicated to members of the LGBTIQ+ community facing socio-economic challenges and homelessness.
This initiative provides a safe space for LGBTIQ+ individuals while alleviating pressure on the Housing Authority, a government statement said.
Managed by the Malta LGBTIQ Rights Movement (MGRM), the residence will accommodate individuals for up to two years.
During this time, residents will receive support to transition to independent housing or be referred to other relevant services.
During the inauguration, Abela emphasized government's commitment to addressing Malta's evolving social realities.
"We could have stopped at the major civil rights reforms we have achieved, but we did not. We remain attuned to our people's needs, and this project reflects our values of inclusion in a society that embraces and values everyone," Abela said.
Galdes highlighted the government's holistic approach to social and affordable housing.
He commended the Housing Authority's collaboration with NGOs like MGRM, and said that with the help of the Housing Development Fund, Dar il-Qawsalla will make a tangible difference not just for the LGBTIQ+ community but also for the beneficiaries and their families.
Residents at Dar il-Qawsalla will also benefit from free social work and therapeutic support services provided by the Rainbow Support Services.
These programs aim to help individuals rebuild their social networks, explore employment or education opportunities, reconnect with family or friends, and ultimately regain their independence, Galdes said.
