The President of the European Parliament and Maltese MEP Roberta Metsola was featured during Google’s 2024 ‘Year in Search.’
The search engine published its annual “optimistic, editorial reflection of the year.” Google uses its top global search trends to identify and spotlight the standout moments that have defined the year. For 2024, Google is celebrating “Breakout Searches” – searches that saw a meteoric 5,000% increase in search interest around the world. These searches represent what was most significant in the culture of 2024 and of course the global elections were a part of that story.
President Metsola’s statement that “2024 will be the biggest global election year in history” encapsulated this year’s record breaking democratic process in a year across the world.
The footage of Roberta Metsola casting her vote in Sliema’s primary school accompanies audiovisual shots of US President-elect Donald Trump, and UK’s Prime Minister Keir Starmer during their respective electoral campaigns, along with the headline ‘breakout elections.’
Other elements in the 4-minute round up included athletes breaking records during this summer’s Paris Olympic Games and other sporting highlights, the artists that packed open spaces and the news that made the biggest headlines.
In 2024, almost 200 million people participated during the European elections. During these elections, President Roberta Metsola got elected with a record number of votes in Malta and Gozo, being re-elected as President of the European Parliament, obtaining 90% of the votes cast.
