PN decries ‘shameful and deplorable’ EuroPride overspending

The Nationalist Party has decried what it described as the “shameful and deplorable” overspending of public money on EuroPride with no system of accountability when these funds could have been used to address the real needs of the LGBTIQ+ community.

The PN said that it has always supported mass events, festivals, and national activities that promote diversity while showcasing what Malta has to offer.

“Together with the LGBTIQ+ community, we were honoured and proud that Malta hosted EuroPride in 2023 – so much so that FOIPN – the party’s equal opportunities branch – participated in this event through a Community Discussion – and we hope this important and prestigious event will return to our country in the coming years,” the PN said in a statement on Tuesday.

The party said however that since the event was funded by public money, it insists that the rules on public spending must always be respected. “This ensures that public funds are spent responsibly, without unnecessary waste. This principle should apply at all times and in every case, whether it concerns a concert, film, hospitals, legal services, or anything else.”

The statement comes after the National Audit Office found that the EuroPride Parade soared over its originally intended budget by over €2 million – almost double the projected amount – and that there were major procurement shortcomings as well.

“It is deeply shameful that funds were spent on extravagant concerts instead of addressing the genuine needs of the LGBTIQ+ community. Had the money been spent wisely, more activities and initiatives could have been organised, making EuroPride an even greater success. Instead, this opportunity was squandered at the expense of the LGBTIQ+ community. Once again, the Government exploited the LGBTIQ+ community without giving them what they truly deserve,” the PN said.

The party said that it looks forward to working closely with the LGBTIQ+ community to understand their true needs and priorities in this area. “A new PN Government will ensure effective programmes and initiatives, with allocated funds managed transparently, where people are always placed at the centre of every initiative,” the party said.

“The Auditor's report clearly shows a tired Government, lacking long-term vision and focused solely on favouring its inner circle. The PN remains committed to ensuring that the principles of accountability, transparency, and good governance are always at the forefront of its policies so that the Maltese people are given the respect and value they deserve,” it concluded.

The statement was signed by Jamie Vella, the Equal Opportunities Forum PN (FOIPN) President, and PN MP and spokesperson for equality Graziella Attard Previ.
