17,580 births and 16,514 deaths in Malta from 2020 to 2023

There were 17,580 total births and 16,514 total deaths in Malta from 2020 to 2023 according to statistics provided by Finance Minister Clyde Caruana.

Caruana was responding to questions posed by Nationalist Party MP Paula Mifsud Bonnici, who asked the minister for information regarding the number of babies born throughout the last four years as well as the number of deaths in the same time period. Mifsud Bonnici also asked how many of the babies were born to foreign nationals or to those with Maltese citizenship, as well as how many of the deaths were of individuals aged over 80.

From the statistics provided by the Finance Minister, it is shown that there were 4,414 total resident live births in 2020, with 3,147 of the mothers being Maltese and 1,267 being foreign.

For 2021, there were 4,395 total births, with 3,050 being to Maltese mothers and 1,345 being to foreigners.

In 2022, there were 4,309 total births, with 3,049 being to Maltese mothers and 1,260 to foreign mothers.

There were 4,462 total births in 2023, to 2,963 Maltese and 1,499 foreign mothers.

Caruana said that there were 4,091 total deaths in 2020, with 2,122 being male and 1,969 being female. 2,156 of the deaths were of individuals aged 80 or more.

For 2021, there were 4,163 total deaths. 2,086 were male and 2,077 were female. 2,149 were aged 80 or more.

There were 4,230 total deaths in 2022, with 2,032 male and 2,051 female. 2,198 were aged 80 or more.

In 2023, there were 4,030 total deaths. Of those deaths, 2,034 were male and 1,996 female. 2,142 of the deaths were of individuals aged 80 or more.
