Infrastructural works are currently underway in Ħal Għaxaq to strengthen electricity and water services. These works are expected to result in better services for the locality’s residents, whose population exceeds 6,000.
During a visit to the locality with Energy Minister Miriam Dalli and Għaxaq Mayor Karl Boxall, Enemalta and the Water Services Corporation explained that the ongoing projects will lead to more stable electricity supply and improvements to the drinking water and sewage networks.
“We are insisting that the work be carried out in full collaboration between the entities and in full cooperation with local councils to ensure that these projects truly meet the community’s needs while keeping inconvenience to a minimum. Infrastructural works are certainly not easy, but with proper planning and efficiency, we can deliver these projects,” stated Minister Miriam Dalli.
Indeed, the infrastructural work is being carried out in close collaboration so that different services can be laid simultaneously.
Enemalta is carrying out reinforcement works on the distribution system. In collaboration with Infrastructure Malta and Transport Malta, 6.4 kilometres of new underground cables are being laid. This aims to strengthen the electricity network in Ħal Għaxaq and the surrounding areas, and to increase the network’s flexibility in case of any difficulties. This initiative forms part of a broader project involving the installation of 60km of new underground cables in 21 localities across Malta and Gozo.
Throughout this year, Enemalta will also commission two new substations and continue work on its low-voltage network. In recent months, Enemalta has already carried out several projects on new low-voltage feeders in the heart of the village and has commissioned a new substation.
Meanwhile, the Water Services Corporation has invested in improving the sewage and potable water infrastructure. The project, now in its final stages and scheduled for completion in the coming weeks, aims to ensure that the Corporation’s network is fully equipped to meet both current and future demand—thereby strengthening its mission to provide efficient services to the community.
Għaxaq Mayor Karl Boxall stated, “These very important investments for our locality will be strengthening the water, sewage, and electricity services. I would like to thank Enemalta and the Water Services Corporation for their important work to further enhance the infrastructure. While these works may cause some inconvenience to residents, I thank them for the cooperation they are giving us so that the works can be carried out with the least possible disruption.”
The total investment in these works exceeds €2.4 million. Also present during this visit were Enemalta Chairman Eng. Ryan Fava and Water Services Corporation Chief Executive Karl Cilia.
