Updated: Government continues to play with our country’s security, PN says; PL responds

The security of the country, like health, education, and many other sectors, is not a priority for this Government, the Nationalist Party said Friday.

It has now been 22 days since two Moroccans who escaped from an airplane which had made an emergency landing have been on the run, the PN said.

"To date, no statement has been issued by the government about what happened, and the public remains without any explanation of what really occurred in this case.To date, Minister Byron Camilleri, who is responsible for this matter, has not even made a post on Facebook to update us on the situation, as though nothing has happened," the PN said.

It also seems as though it's not a concern that our country has thousands of foreigners fraudulently registered at the addresses of Maltese citizens, the PN said.

"Minister Camilleri appears not to be too bothered by all this." The security of our country is not a priority for the Minister responsible for it, the PN said.

The PN said it understands that the officials and workers striving to maintain the country's security must operate with limited resources, and it expresses full solidarity with them, while also thanking them for the valuable work they do to protect us.

"But the government must wake up and start truly safeguarding the Maltese people by prioritising the security of our country through actions, not just words, giving it the importance it deserves."

The statement was signed by Darren Carabott, PN spokesman for home affairs.

The Labour Party, in response, said that security in the country has been strengthened in recent years.

"Research, results and international reports - such as the Rule of Law Index, confirm that our country's security is strong, with the latter placing Malta among the ten safest countries in the world. Nationalist MP Darren Carabott is more deserving of a title such as shadow minister for social media, since he seems to conduct his political affairs there where he is often caught on the wrong foot."

"One may recall a few occasions: The PN attacks the country on security, at the same time ignoring the results achieved in our country. The PN attacks enforcement, but then its own spokesmen attack the police when they take action to remove from Malta people without the necessary permits. The PN attacks the authorities who have done their job by fighting abuse, because the PN is not interested in fighting abuse but in partisan propaganda."

The PN talks about security, but whoever works for security in this country has been trampled upon by the Opposition, the PL said.

"In contrast, the Labour Government gave the best conditions and resources to all workers within this sector."

"Carabott took to Facebook to complain that the Government kept mum on the airport incident a few weeks back. False. Minister Byron Camilleri provided detailed answers and explanations to the press. Carabott even blamed the Police, accusing them of silence. False. The Malta Police Force issued official press statements."
