‘Fix the system before the State fails yet another victim,’ Metsola says after Fenech bail news

European Parliament President Roberta Metsola has said that Malta’s justice system needs to be urgently fixed, before the State “fails yet another victim.”

Metsola wrote on Facebook hours after Yorgen Fenech – the businessman who stands charged with complicity in the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia – was granted bail by a court.

“Those with everything to lose have always underestimated our determination to ensure those responsible for Daphne Caruana Galizia’s assassination and those who tried to cover it up, face their crimes. Today, that determination will only grow stronger,” Metsola wrote.

“We are not going away. The rot is deep,” she said.

She described Malta’s justice system as a broken one because it forces the courts to allow those accused of the most heinous of crimes to be allowed out of jail on bail simply because their trial by jury took more than half a decade to get underway.

“It is a system that cannot deliver justice. It is a system that those responsible for fixing, have neglected and abandoned. It is a system designed to fail,” she said.

“It is a system that allows for the victimisation of the victims and their families, and allows for abuse by those determined to never pay for their alleged crimes,” she added.

“It's 2025. Fix the system before the State fails yet another victim.”
