No religious belief, culture, sexual orientation, gender identity, skin colour, appearance or similar factors can ever be factored in when considering the teaching and learning needs of a student, Malta Union of Teachers president Marco Bonnici writes.
In an opinion piece published today, Bonnici writes that all those who work with students can tell that students are not biased or conditioned with any of the above. It is instead the adults who condition the students in perpetuating stereotypes which distinguish and discriminate between us.
This week, parents of a child attending a school in San Gwann wanted to transfer the child to another school after they discovered that their son's new teacher was gay. The couple later reversed their decision.
