Tarxien has become the latest locality to launch an Active Ageing Centre, the Parliamentary Secretariats for Active Ageing and Local Government stated.
The Secretariats said that this launch was achieved through an agreement with the Tarxien Local Council. They continued that the centre will offer a safe space where the elderly can meet and be able to attend educational and social sessions, as well as remain active in their community.
They remarked that the number of localities with Active Ageing Centres has now reached 35, with more than 2,500 seniors regularly visiting the centres. The Tarxien centre will be operating from the hall in Dar Nazareth, they stated, as a collaboration between the Local Council and Active Ageing and Community Care.
Activities which will be offered at the centre are designed to promote lifelong learning, provide knowledge about physical and me entail health, and strengthen social interaction among the elderly of the Tarxien locality, the Secretariats stated.
The Parliamentary Secretary for Active Ageing, Malcolm Paul Agius Galea, remarked that the Active Ageing Centres are an important pillar for the elderly to remain active and independent in their communities. He said that the government remains committed to continuing its investment in such centres so that more elderly people have the opportunity to participate in educational and social activities that help maintain an active lifestyle.
For her part, the Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government, Alison Zerafa Civelili, acknowledged the Tarxien Local Council and Active Ageing and Community Care for the agreement which will benefit a number of elderly people. She spoke of the importance of the elderly staying active in the community, while also taking care of their health and getting together.
The CEO of Active Ageing and Community Care, Renzo De Gabriele, stated that the Active Ageing Centres offer a widespread program of activities which encourage social involvement and give the elderly the opportunity to share their experiences with others.
Tarxien Mayor Joseph Abela Galea expressed his satisfaction that the Local Council is providing space in the locality's centre to host this service, which he said will offer a positive and welcoming environment for the locality's elderly.
The Secretariats concluded that the centre will be open every Friday, and will be hosting several educational and social sessions for the elderly.
