Economy Minister Silvio Schembri has welcomed with satisfaction a magistrate's decision to reject a request for a magisterial inquiry made by lawyer Jason Azzopardi against him.
Magistrate Antoine Agius Bonnici turned down Azzopardi's request for an inquiry into Schembri over unexplained wealth and said that the complaint filed by Azzopardi did not meet the necessary requirements at law to warrant a magisterial inquiry.
In a Facebook post on Wednesday, Schembri said that the magistrate's decision confirms what he has always maintained: that there is nothing in what Azzopardi has claimed.
"Regrettably, to reach this point, I had to endure a personal ordeal that began on New Year's Eve when I was informed that this request had been made against me," Schembri said.
He said that from that day until now, he has been waiting for this positive outcome under a "cloud of uncertainty" that caused distress both for himself and his family.
"To all those who always believe in the truth, I sincerely thank you. To my wife, children, and family, thank you for standing firm despite everything. Thank you to the many friends and constituents who shared this difficult moment with me," Schembri added.
He continued that this only strengthens his determination to continue working, not for himself, but for Malta and for all those who believe in true justice.
