Parliamentary Secretary for Youths, Research and Innovation Keith Azzopardi Tanti announced the launch of a new research project in innovative smart manufacturing.
At a press conference held at Seifert Systems Ltd in the Ħal Far industrial zone, Azzopardi Tanti launched the initiative which forms part of a broader program that includes 10 innovative research projects aimed at enhancing the competitiveness of Malta’s industrial sector, creating new jobs, and contributing to sustainable economic growth.
The project is being carried out in collaboration with the private sector and the University of Malta, a government statement said.
Azzopardi Tanti said that this project is not just about technology; it is about equipping the industry with the tools and skills needed to compete on a global level.
“Smart manufacturing is not only creating economic opportunities but is also generating high-quality jobs for Maltese workers and graduates,” he said.
This innovative project aims to develop advanced technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, the Internet of Things (IoT), and automation in production.
Additionally, it will help local companies expand and compete in the global market while providing specialized training for workers to acquire the necessary skills for this evolving sector, the statement said.
University of Malta engineer Emanuel Francalanza, who will be leading the project, spoke of its transformative impact.
“Smart manufacturing is not only revolutionizing the industry, but it is also creating new opportunities to establish a more sustainable and competitive economy. This project is an important step towards a future where technology and innovation are at the heart of our economic development,” Francalanza said.
General Manager of Seifert Systems Philip Seifert spoke of Malta’s strategic advantages.
He said that Malta is one of the best locations for doing business, not only due to its strategic position but also because of its investor-friendly environment and modern infrastructure.
“The Maltese government has always been supportive, making Malta an ideal place for international companies to establish and expand their operations. Seifert Systems is a clear example of how Malta can serve as a home for companies seeking growth and innovation,” Seifert said.
The project represents another significant step toward innovation, positioning Malta’s industry and economy at the forefront of technological advancement, the statement said.
It said that the initiative also reflects the effective collaboration between the government, the private sector, and educational institutions.
Azzopardi Tanti said that investment in smart manufacturing is not just about economic gains, but also about creating opportunities, benefiting the industry and building a sustainable future for the generations to come.
