PL Deputy Leader and MEP Alex Agius Saliba has written to the President and General Secretary of the European People's Party to ask them to "investigate the shortcomings in Nationalist Party", one of the members of the EPP.
"The PN has failed to submit audited accounts for the last four years and the list of donations for the last three years. Maltese legislation introduced in 2016 stipulates that political parties are to indicate the source of funds for donations which exceed €7,000," a Labour Party statement read.
"In his letter, Agius Saliba explained how the timely submission of data about party financing is of utmost importance to ensure the highest standards of accountability and transparency. 'One cannot on one hand lambast the Government for not doing enough to uphold the rule of law and on the other refuse to reveal who is financing the apparatus which is being used to do so! Our voters deserve to understand the motives behind our political positions or lack thereof, and legislations on party financing are meant to address this basic democratic right'," the PL statement read.
Agius Saliba also said that the credibility of PN's record keeping is "diminished further as their treasurer, Veronica Perici Calascione, is the daughter of the Deputy Leader, Alex Perici Calascione. This close personal relationship between individuals in high positions within the party gives the impression that the party's finances are being handled as though it were a small family business. PN's failure to submit their finances must also be considered in the light of their refusal to implement legislation on party financing when they were in Government."
The Labour Deputy Leader said: "It is evident that PN are doing their utmost to withhold the publication of their records for as long as possible. They have tried to blame their auditors for the delay in the publication of their audited accounts, but they don't need their auditor to tell them how much they received in donations and from whom!"
