Speaker Angu Farrugia on Tuesday censured the Opposition Leader for the words he used against the Prime Minister, warning him not to repeat what he said as this would lead to steps being taken against him (Opposition Leader).
Farrugia was ruling on the chaotic sitting that ensued on Monday after he had turned down a request by the Opposition to have a debate on the 200 kilogramme of drugs heist from an AFM compound on Sunday.
Farrugia on Monday ordered both the PM and the Opposition leader to withdraw comments they had made but, while PM Robert Abela complied, Opposition Leader Bernard Grech stood by what he had said.
Abela had described an Opposition MP, Alex Borg, as a clown (purcinell), while Grech had linked the government with criminals. Abela withdrew his comments but Grech said he stood by them as a court of law had ruled that the government was an accomplice with those who "stole" public hospitals from the Maltese people.
The Speaker stated that he was satisfied that the Prime Minister retracted his words, and continued that the Chair would take the necessary steps regarding the Opposition Leader's refusal to retract his comments.
Farrugia said that Monday's session was an example of deplorable behaviour, and continued that the Chamber would like to remind the MPs that they are expected to behave appropriately with respect to the Chamber and with respect to the people who are viewing the session.
Farrugia deplored the behaviour of members of both sides of the House which led to disorder, so much so that the sitting was suspended five times and eventually could not continue its work.
"The undignified, almost shameful and ultimately deplorable behaviour, as we actually saw in yesterday's session, has no place in this Chamber," Farrugia said.
