Perhaps it would have been better had Byron Camilleri resigned – Alfred Sant

Former Labour Prime Minister Alfred Sant indicated that he would have accepted the resignation of Home Minister Byron Camilleri.

Writing today in The Malta Independent, Sant said that "Camilleri did well to offer his resignation following the theft of cannabis from an Army depot. Perhaps it would have been better had he resigned."

Camilleri offered his resignation last Sunday after 200 kilogrammes of cannabis were stolen from a compound under the responsibility of the Armed Forces of Malta. The resignation was refused by Prime Minister Robert Abela.

Calls for Camilleri's resignation have kept coming from the Nationalist Party and NGOs, with the Cabinet of Ministers saying that they endorsed the PM's decision not to accept the resignation and that they had full confidence in the minister.

In his article today, Sant said that Labour had "made much fun" when Prime Minister Eddie Fenech Adami had resigned "confident that he would be called back".

The same applied in this case.

"A politician in charge is responsible both for what he does and for what do those who in his name, exercise public service roles of a decisional and managerial nature. If they mess up, he/she is equallly involved," Sant wrote.
