St Paul's Bay minority leader Alfred Grima has resigned as a Council member in the St Paul's Bay Local Council with immediate effect, saying that this was a consequence of the "serious lack" of good governance.
Grima, who was elected minority leader in 2024's election on the Labour ticket, took to Facebook on Wednesday to announce he will be resigning from his post immediately, penning a letter of resignation to the Acting Deputy Executive Secretary.
Grima served as the locality's mayor for the previous five years.
"I have been forced to take this step as a consequence of the serious lack of good governance, which seems to be allowed to continue as if nothing happened," Grima said.
He thanked his fellow members of the Local Council, the Executive Secretaries, Members of the AKL and of the Northern Region, with whom he said he had the privilege of working with during the 23 years that he has served in public life.
"I also extend my heartfelt thanks to all the council workers and the residents, especially those who have always shown confidence in me," Grima said, also thanking his family for the great sacrifices they have made.
In the letter, Grima condemned the "disparaging actions" of the current Mayor, who he said has decided to create "division instead of collaboration."
The current Mayor is former PN MP Censu Galea, who was elected in last year's elections.
Grima said that a "tribal attitude filled with partisan politics" has once again found its place at the St Paul's Bay Local Council, after an "absence of six years."
He said that lack of transparency, breaching of regulations, and misinformation have become "the order of the day."
