The Government led Robert Abela has burdened our country with the highest level of debt Malta has ever seen. And it has created the biggest set of problems the Maltese people have ever faced. Last year, Robert Abela and Clyde Caruana led Malta into the Excessive Deficit Procedure.
In just five years, they have accumulated as much debt as all previous governments since Independence combined, from Ġorġ Borg Olivier to Joseph Muscat.
If the government had incurred this debt to fix the very problems it created, it would be one thing. But instead, it has saddled entire generations with debt while crashing the country in every sector: traffic, the cost of living, infrastructure issues, and healthcare.
During a press conference addressed by PN Deputy Leader Alex Perici Calascione and Shadow Minister for the Economy Jerome Caruana Cilia, the Partit Nazzjonalista stated that Robert Abela and Clyde Caruana have taken Malta's debt to well over €10.5 billion by the end of January this year, according to the National Statistics Office
Despite this massive debt, the government is failing to find concrete solutions to the country's major problems; problems that affect us all on a daily basis.
Robert Abela is responsible for half of this entire debt, with little to show for it. Since taking office, he has more than doubled Malta's debt. Robert Abela has become synonymous with debt. In the past year alone, he has added €803 million in debt.
This record-breaking debt is leading to record-high interest payments. Every single day, we are paying €710,000 in interest alone.
This debt crisis is causing concern among businesses, discouraging investors, and creating an unstable environment for our country.
Meanwhile, the Government continues to squander taxpayers' money; all while its inner circle continues to get richer, as even members of the Government itself have admitted.
The Government is failing the Maltese and Gozitan people. It is failing in governance, as it pushes forward laws that protect abusers rather than citizens. It is failing in infrastructure, leaving the country in disrepair. It is failing in the economy, as the cost of living crisis worsens.
Today, the Labour Government no longer talks about Malta's finances. It no longer talks about the people's money because that money has now become their own.
And in the meantime, those outside the Government's inner circle, tens of thousands of families, pensioners, young people, and businesses are left to face today's challenges alone.
The gap between rich and poor continues to grow.
Challenges in quality of life, the environment, and physical and mental health are worsening. There is a complete lack of good governance and accountability from those in power.
The Maltese people deserve a country they can recognise again. They deserve a country they can believe in. They deserve a country where their own talent and hard work lead them to success.
This is why the Partit Nazzjonalista is calling on everyone who wants to see Malta regain its direction to be in front of Parliament this Sunday at 3:00pm for the protest with the theme "A Government That Has Failed."
