The Nationalist Party is determined to defend the fundamental principles of democracy and will not allow itself to be intimidated for purely partisan reasons, leader Bernard Grech said Saturday.
This is why the PN will continue to be a clear voice for the truth in Parliament. Once again, the Labour Government is failing to use Parliament's time to discuss and solve the real problems facing Maltese and Gozitan families. Instead, it is exploiting it as a tool of political vendetta, launching a fascist attack against the Partit Nazzjonalista, which is fulfilling its constitutional role as the Opposition.
The PN expects parliamentary time to be dedicated to discussing and addressing national issues of great importance, such as the uncontrolled population increase, the rising cost of living, the severe traffic problem, the crisis in the healthcare and education sectors, the theft of drugs from the Armed Forces, the growing lack of security in our country, the €400 million stolen in the Vitals and Steward deal, and institutionalised corruption, he said.
Yet, instead of focusing on these critical issues, the Government has hastily put forward a Motion to be debated next Monday - a direct attack on the 123,000 Maltese citizens who voted for the Partit Nazzjonalista in the last general election. The Government is attempting to deprive these thousands of Maltese and Gozitans of their Constitutional right to representation.
Grech was referring to a sitting on Monday which will be dedicated to a PL motion defending the Speaker "following successive attacks by MP Karol Aquilina."
This is a direct threat to our democracy, as the Labour majority in Parliament is attempting to condemn those who oppose it by assuming the role of prosecutor, judge, and jury all at once.
The PN will never be complicit in this travesty of democracy that the Government is trying to impose. This political attack is yet another confirmation that the Labour Party has seized control of every institution and is abusing them to protect its corrupt politicians. The Motion presented is full of falsehoods and nothing more than an extension of Labour Party propaganda, as if it were a news item from Super One, Grech said.
The PN remains focused on its work to serve Maltese and Gozitan families and will not accept Parliament being used by the Labour Government as a political tribunal in a bid to intimidate and attack the Partit Nazzjonalista and its Members of Parliament.
