The Ministry for Social Policy and Children's Rights said that it has secured a significant increase in funding for shelters supporting women and children who have escaped domestic violence.
An agreement was signed this morning between the ministry and the Merhba Bik Foundation, securing €1,354,515 in funding over the next three years - an increase of 26% from the previous agreement.
This funding will support two key residences operated by the foundation: Dar Santa Bakita and Dar Merhba Bik. Dar Santa Bakita offers a therapeutic programme focused on individual counselling, work, and social training, which prepares individuals to integrate into society. Dar Merhba Bik serves as an emergency shelter for women and children without a home, providing crucial support for those recovering from traumatic experiences.
Minister for Social Policy and Children's Rights, Michael Falzon, expressed his admiration for the services provided at these residences. "Every time I visit residences like this, I am filled with courage when I see the strong services that are provided to these people. These residences do not only have the use of a shelter but also a place where emotional support is provided, in what is also known as group therapy," he said.
The €1,354,515 funding agreement with Merhba Bik Foundation is part of the Ministry's broader commitment to supporting vulnerable individuals who have suffered from domestic violence. This agreement is one of 34 signed with 24 different entities, totalling €13.55 million, an increase of €1.5 million from last year's budget.
The funds will help sustain and expand vital services that offer shelter, counselling, and rehabilitation for those affected by domestic violence, the government said. With these agreements, the Ministry aims to ensure that victims of domestic violence are provided with the tools and support needed to rebuild their lives in a safe and supportive environment.
