A new outdoor gym has been installed in Ġnien il-Familja, Marsaxlokk. This was constructed through funds from the Capital Projects Funding Scheme, which is overseen by the Local Government Directorate, within the Parliamentary Secretariat for Local Government.
Present at this outdoor gym's inauguration were the Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government, Alison Zerafa Civelli, Marsaxlokk mayor Steven Grech, and other members of the town's local council.
This gym will be available for public use, including those who attend the local council's free physical exercise classes.
PS Zerafa Civelli said that local councils play an important role in the wellbeing of their residents. Hence, the government lets local councils come up with their own ideas to help their respective localities, since local councils are best aware of the needs of their locality and their residents, she said.
She said that in recent months, several initiatives have been taken up by local councils and the Regional Communities through government funding.
She also observed that this year, the government has already invested a "substantial amount" in the Capital Projects Funding Scheme because it believes in the wellbeing of society, in the increase of open spaces, and in the need for recreational spaces.
Marsaxlokk mayor Steven Grech said that the locality has been desiring a space like this for a long time, since the garden is typically used for physical activity anyway. He thanked the government for supporting local councils in carrying out such projects.
