ADPD says PN and PL are adjusting electoral districts to suit their needs

ADPD – The Green Party said in a statement on Wednesday morning that both the PN and the PL are trying to get Malta’s electoral districts adjusted to suit their own respective needs.

It referred to two reports issued on Tuesday on the proposed shift in electoral districts by the PL and PN respectively, saying that they both show how the two major parties only care about pulling towards themselves and favouring themselves, even though they are meant to serve a constitutional role in the country’s interest.

ADPD Secretary General Ralph Cassar said that the two reports clearly show that both the PL and the PN are proposing electoral districts “which serve the interests of their respective parties.”

“The fact remains that the electoral system, put together by them and in agreement with each other, is not good and is wide open for games with districts by both parties in the Electoral Commission,” he said.

“History has shown that every time one of them is in government, they played around with the districts however it suited them. This time, the Labour Party is doing the same. In a good electoral system, the way in which districts are split will not make a difference to an election,” Cassar said.

ADPD Chairperson Sandra Gauci meanwhile said that every vote counts, which is why ADPD has taken the electoral system to court, as it “conflicts with human right as outlined in the Constitution, as some of the votes are now worth nothing.”

“This is why we want to a good electoral system, so the door isn’t left wide open for the PL and PN’s confusion, with meddled electoral districts, depending on whose turn it is.”

Now the PN will have to lower its head like the PL had to in the past. But both of them are happy because they know that when it’s their turn, they can mess around and manoeuvre for their party to try and benefit,” she concluded.
