The Labour Party launched the programme of activities related to the Workers Day feast at a news conference held in Valletta, during which it was announced that the theme chosen for this year is 'Through Work: Wealth for the Maltese' (Bix-Xogħol: il-Ġid għall-Maltin).
Deputy Leader for Party Affairs, Alex Agius Saliba spoke about the importance of this feast and said that it was the Labour Party that always improved working conditions in our country, by introducing many important laws. He explained how the feast of 1 May was organised for the first time in 1923 and said that it had been organised together with the General Workers' Union for some time.
He said that the Labour Government continued to work in favour of the workers and referred to some achievements made over the past 12 years. He mentioned that out of 8,000 unemployed people in 2013, Malta today has the lowest unemployment rate in the European Union. He also said that the Labour Government had given back the public holidays that had been taken by the Nationalist Government.
He concluded by saying that, unlike in other neighbouring countries, in our country Workers' Day is not an occasion for workers to protest but a celebration of the achievements made in this area.
Labour Party President Alex Sciberras said that this year's theme means that work generates wealth which is then distributed fairly among people, according to their needs.
He said that in preparation for 1 May, the Labour Party will be organising various activities, including special radio and television programmes, as well as a documentary that will give a historical overview of this feast.
Sciberras said that on Sunday, 27 April, the Prime Minister will be visiting three localities and called on the people to meet him in Paola, Qormi and Rabat, whilst between 28 April and 30 April a number of visits will be made by the Labour Party administration, at various places of work.
The highlight of the celebrations will be reached on 1 May with a mass meeting taking place in Merchants Street, Valletta. Before the mass meeting, the Labour Party band will play from near the General Workers' Union to Castille Square, where there will be various attractions for the whole family.
The mass meeting will be addressed by Prime Minister and Labour Leader Robert Abela and two deputy leaders Ian Borg and Alex Agius Saliba. Before and after the speeches a music show will be held by local artists and an internationally renowned group for this event.
