Twenty new correctional officers have joined the Correctional Services Agency after completing a 16-week intensive training course. A quarter of the new recruits are women, the government said Saturday.

The officers took their oath of office at Corradino Correctional Facility in the presence of Minister for Home Affairs, Security and Employment Byron Camilleri and Agency CEO Christopher Siegersma.

Their training covered academic, physical, first aid, security, firefighting, mental health, and rehabilitation modules. Another recruitment drive is expected to launch soon to further boost staffing levels.

Minister Camilleri praised the Agency's recent progress, stating that the prison system is no longer recognisable from what it once was. He urged new officers to maintain discipline while supporting inmates in their rehabilitation journey.

He also noted improved working conditions for officers, including a second collective agreement recently signed, offering an annual salary increase of approximately €5,000. Additionally, overtime is now compensated at higher rates compared to the previous system.

Agency CEO Christopher Siegersma described the role as a vocation requiring a balance of authority, dignity, and humanity. He highlighted ongoing professional development opportunities for staff.

The best-performing recruit was Scott Sultana, who achieved the top marks in the course.
