Alex Borg says he wants to bring many more youths to PN; sees his age ‘more as an advantage'

PN MP Alex Borg said he sees his age more as an advantage than a disadvantage, when giving a comment to this newsroom about his decision to contest for the role of PN Leader.

Borg, on Tuesday evening, issued a Facebook video announcing his intention to contest for the role. PN Leader Bernard Grech had announced his decision to resign earlier in June. Borg is now the second person to announce his intention to contest for the post, after former PN Leader Adrian Delia did so on Monday

Borg was asked how, the PN with him as leader, would tackle the next general election, and whether he believes the PN would be able to beat the Labour Party. "My first goal will be to look at the internal situation of the party and improve it as much as possible," he said.

Even a day is a long time in politics, let alone two years till the election, he said.

"I don't believe it is impossible, we will try and do everything we can. I believe that a new face for the party is something radical which will send shockwaves, showing that the PN is DemoChristian, but also progressive, believing in the abilities of youths and that they are capable of being an essential part of Maltese politics. My goal is to continue bringing in many more youths to the PN," he said. "That sends the message that we are open to the new mentality and that we are ready to offer hope to youths who, at the end of the day, are the future. That is essentially what I said in my video statement," he said, referring to the video announcing his intention to contest for the PN's leadership election, "that I want to bring a generational change in the party."

Told that some might view him being green to politics as being a bit problematic, he was asked if his inexperience could be problematic in the future, or whether he just sees his youth as a positive. "I see it more as an advantage than a disadvantage. I understand that there might be those who see age as a limitation, but with the proper team around me, who would be people who would probably be more intelligent than I, we are capable of achieving very good results for the PN."

Asked about the reports that there was some form of agreement between him and fellow PN MP Adrian Delia, that one of them would contest and the other wouldn't, he said: "That was published by a news portal. We as the PN, as far as I know, never made backroom agreements and always chose to see the interest of the party and party members."
