The Labour Party has said that a PN-led government "shall dismantle the cash rebate, and destroy the film service industry in our country."
"This would result in the loss of thousands of jobs of people that directly, and indirectly, earn their living from this industry which in the last 8 years generated one billion euros in the economy," the PL said.
The PL said that Malta has a strong incentive package that allows it to compete around the world. "Other countries such as Cyprus, Greece, Italy, England and also the US State of California have built incentive packages like ours. Without any difficulty, Nationalist spokesperson Julie Zahra today confirmed that a Nationalist Party in Government would stop the cash rebate system as it operates today and said that instead it would introduce a capped rebate system which would mean a system that is weaker and inferior to the current one. At the same time Zahra neither stated how much the capping would be nor explained what consultation she has carried out before announcing this decision."
The PL said that she "does not care about the fact that, thanks to the cash rebate system, blockbusters were produced in our country, and have created and will continue to create thousands of jobs and generate strong business activity in every sector of the economy. Nor does she care that the Auditor General himself has given a good certificate to the cash rebate system by saying that it is being operated well and that it complies with state aid rules."
"The Auditor General's report also confirms that the return on investment stemming from economic reports is true."
"She has decided that if the PN is in Government it will dismantle the scheme as operated today, which is creating wealth, and this due to the fact that this scheme has been done by the Labour Government."
Instead of looking at wealth creation, Zahra, like her PN companions, looks only at the faces. The PN will never change.
A Labour Government determined to continue to invest strongly in this industry, and will not allow the bleak partisanism of an Opposition in chaos to break an industry that is leaving money in the pockets of Maltese and Gozitan workers and businesses.
