Tuesday, 5 August 2025, 20:01 Last update: about 12 months ago

A former police officer admitted to facilitating illegal immigration into Malta and also to providing false documentation.

The 46-year-old, who cannot be named due to a court order, was sentenced to 13 months in prison, suspended for three years. He was also fined €23,300.

Being arraigned in court on Monday, he admitted to assisting people to enter the country illegally, and making false declarations in documents.

The parties had reached an agreement, which penalised the accused and also ensured that investigations could continue.

The charges were over activities between the period of 1 January 2022 and 1 April 2025, the court heard.

The accused was also charged with conspiring with others to enable the entry or exit of persons from Malta unlawfully.

The prosecution was led by Inspector Karl Roberts on behalf of the Police Commissioner. Lawyers Joe Giglio, Mattea Giglio, and Noel Bianco appeared for the defence.

Magistrate Lara Lanfranco presided.
