The first phase that will lead to a new primary school in Naxar has begun, the Ministries for Education and European Funds stated.

The ministries said that an infrastructural project that will lead to the rebuilding of the Naxxar primary school, which forms part of the Marija Regina College, is in its first phase. They said that work related to the demolition of the existing building has begun, and continued that as part of the first phase of the project, preparations are being made for the eventual demolition of the old building, of which they said the facade will be retained due to its characteristics.

They stated that the new school will have a total of 46 classrooms, including 20 kindergarten classrooms. They continued that while the old school was spread over two floors, the new building will be on five floors, with two floors being underground for ancillary purposes while three floors are above street level. It added that as the existing facade will be maintained, the new floor will have a design which respects the facade.

European Funds Minister Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi said that this project is another confirmation of the Ministry’s and the Foundation for Tomorrow’s Schools’ firm commitment to modern infrastructure. He spoke of the importance of this investment in the educational sector and in the local community of Naxxar, and continued that this project, which is being carried out with the support of the European Regional Development Fund, will offer a modern, inclusive, and sustainable environment for students and educators.

The ministries said that the school will include a number of classrooms for subjects such as art, music, and drama, along with an industrial kitchen, sports facilities, recreational spaces, a multi-sensory room, and a hall for different uses as well as a library which can be opened to the community after school hours. It said that there will also be a green space on the roof of the school, where students can have first-hand experience in the care of trees and plants.

They said that the new school will also have energy-efficient measures introduced, including the installation of photovoltaic panels.

The ministries concluded that the new building will be spread over approximately 13,000 square metres on five levels, with 3,000 square metres of which dedicated to activities that take place in open spaces. It said that the school will accommodate approximately 1,000 children, both in primary and in kindergarten.
