Magistrate Ian Farrugia handed in his resignation on Wednesday.

In a statement, the Office of the President said that "With effect from 11 August 2025, Her Excellency Myriam Spiteri Debono, President of Malta, has accepted the resignation of Magistrate Ian Farrugia, in accordance with the terms of Chapter 564 of the Laws of Malta. Magistrate Farrugia resigned for personal reasons." 

President Myriam Spiteri Debono thanked him for the service he has rendered during his term of office.

Farrugia is expected to be moving abroad with his family.

Farrugia led several prominent inquiries during his time as a Magistrate, including an inquiry into Pilatus Bank which had recommended that criminal action be taken against a number of the bank's personnel.

The inquiry had concluded in 2020 but the conclusions were never officially published.

He was also leading the inquiry into the Montenegro Wind Farm deal.

His work also involved cases such as the leisure clothing scandal.

Earlier this month, the Ministry for Justice and the Reform of the Construction Sector issued a public call for the appointment of two Judges and two Magistrates.
