Abela gives in to Labour’s fascist faction as he reinstates Neville Gafa at OPM, PN says

Thursday, 28 August 2025, 14:22 Last update: about 12 months ago

The news that Neville Gafà has returned to Castille in a position similar to the one he held during Joseph Muscat's tenure as Prime Minister - now under Robert Abela - is a proof of how the fascist faction within the Labour Party is continuing to take over the Partit Laburista from within, the Nationalist Party said Thursday.

It also confirms, if any confirmation were still needed, that the Government led by Robert Abela is increasingly becoming a mere continuation of the corrupt Muscat administration.

This is the second appointment in just one month for Neville Gafà, who openly boasts about his closeness to former Labour leader Joseph Muscat. Recently, the media also revealed that Gafà was tasked with work for the Labour Party in Gozo at district level, a fact confirmed by Labour's Deputy Leader Alex Agius Saliba.

During Joseph Muscat's administration, Neville Gafà served as a person of trust within the Office of the Prime Minister at Castille - a position he lost when Robert Abela took over as Prime Minister in January 2020.

It now appears, however, that Abela has once again given in to internal pressure, the PN said. According to reports published today, Gafà has been re-engaged in a customer care role at Castille, this time under Parliamentary Secretary Andy Ellul, whose portfolio falls directly under the Office of the Prime Minister. It also appears that Gafà has been allocated office space within the Labour Party's headquarters as shown by the social media adverts he is publishing to promote public meetings at Labour's Ċentru Nazzjonali.

As a staunch defender of Joseph Muscat and his inner circle, including former Chief of Staff Keith Schembri, Gafà has, in recent months, launched public attacks against Ministers and other figures within Labour, most notably Owen Bonnici, over what he referred to as a "disgrace" linked to the extravagant spending on the Film Festival and its elitist parties. This was also echoed by Labour's Special Delegate Jason Micallef, who publicly lambasted Minister Bonnici and Film Commissioner Johann Grech over these excesses.

While this controversy continued to unfold, Abela publicly defended Owen Bonnici, showing a clear internal rift within Labour, the PN said Yet now, Abela appears to have swallowed his words and accepted Gafà back at Castille, in the very same role he held under his predecessor Joseph Muscat.

In recent weeks, the Commissioner for Standards in Public Life dismissed entirely a malicious campaign orchestrated by Labour's fascist faction, instigated by complaints filed by Neville Gafà against several Shadow Ministers and MPs from the Partit Nazzjonalista, accusing them of not turning up to work.

The Commissioner found no wrongdoing on the part of any of the PN MPs targeted in this campaign and dismissed all the allegations. To date, no public apology has been issued, neither by Neville Gafà nor by Robert Abela, towards the affected MPs.
