Convicted George Degiorgio has requested a presidential pardon in return for exposing details about the 2014 murder of Jonathan Pace, the businessman behind Tyson Butcher.
In a sworn application submitted on 3 September, Degiorgio's legal team asked for full immunity for crimes committed prior to December 2017. In exchange, he pledged to disclose information about an extensive network of criminal acts, including homicides and bomb plots.
He singled out Pace's shooting as one of the cases he is ready to provide evidence on. Pace was gunned down while standing on a balcony, at a time when he himself faced charges over an assassination attempt on Vince Muscat, known as il-Koħħu. Although his killing went unresolved for years, investigators reopened the case in 2021 after Muscat began cooperating with police.
Degiorgio also requested that his 40-year sentence for his role in the car bomb assassination of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia be reduced to 15 years. He had previously admitted to participating in the 2017 killing.
Earlier this summer, Degiorgio was additionally convicted of the 2015 murder of lawyer Carmel Chircop and sentenced to life imprisonment. Soon after, he sought permission to testify under oath in the ongoing inquiry into Caruana Galizia's assassination. At that time, he insisted that his willingness to cooperate was not linked to any attempt at sentence reduction.
The application, filed by lawyers Noel Bianco and Leslie Cuschieri, was addressed to Assistant Commissioner Keith Arnaud.
