Momentum calls for reflection on the meaning of independence on Malta’s 61st anniversary

Momentum has called for reflection on the meaning of independence on Malta's 61st anniversary.

"Independence was achieved in 1964 through the courage and determination of the Maltese people. It was more than the raising of a flag. It was the assertion that Malta could govern itself with fairness, dignity, and integrity," the political party said.

"Recent developments, including the findings of the National Audit Office on the Fortina case, other proven cases of serious sleaze and ongoing allegations of corruption, raise a difficult question."

Matthew Agius, executive member of Momentum asked: "Are we truly independent if public institutions are weakened by secrecy, conflicts of interest, and decisions that benefit the few rather than the common good?"

"Real independence cannot be measured only in sovereignty. It must be seen in the way public resources are managed responsibly. It must be seen in the protection of land, sea, and heritage. It must be seen in governments that serve citizens transparently, not in arrangements that erode trust."

Momentum calls on citizens, civil society, and institutions to use this Independence Day not only to celebrate our history but also to renew demand for accountability. "Malta deserves institutions that are strong, transparent, and committed to safeguarding the future of the country for all."
