Earlier this summer, the Pembroke and St Joseph Sliema Ranger Guide Groups joined forces for an unforgettable adventure in Sicily. The group consisted of four adult volunteers and 11 enthusiastic girls aged between 13 and 18.
This overseas camp marked a series of firsts: it was the first trip abroad for the Pembroke Rangers and the first joint camp between the Pembroke and St Joseph Sliema units, both part of the North District Girl Guides.
Set against the stunning backdrop of the Madonie Mountains, the experience offered the girls a chance to bond, grow, and explore beyond the Maltese Islands. Their base for the trip was the charming and tranquil Pippa's Paddock, nestled in the small town of Alia, southwest of Palermo. Surrounded by mountains, nature, and horses, the campsite offered a welcome retreat from the action-packed days spent exploring the region.
The group ventured into some of Sicily's most picturesque towns, including Noto, Modica, Ortygia, and Polizzi Generosa, each offering a unique blend of history, culture, and beauty. Days were filled with scenic hikes, cultural discoveries, and delicious encounters with traditional Sicilian cuisine especially the famous cannoli, which quickly became a group favourite.
A highlight for many was a visit to a nearby adventure park, where the girls pushed their limits on high rope courses and ziplines. For some, it meant overcoming a fear of heights. For others, it was a chance to shine. The forest setting was made even more magical when a curious fox appeared during a barbecue, adding a touch of wonder to an already memorable evening.
Equally unforgettable was a trip to the sulphur baths. Despite initial hesitation to jump in the murky waters, the girls embraced the experience and appreciated the soothing effects of the mineral-rich water on their skin.
Another relaxing day was spent by a lake, where the group enjoyed swimming, canoeing, and boat rides in a peaceful, sun-drenched setting.
Food played a central role in the adventure. From generous meals at local producers featuring freshly made ricotta, salamis, cheeses, and olive oils, to endless pasta dishes and sweet treats, Sicilian hospitality shone through every bite. By midweek, the group was already joking about how much they were eating but no one was complaining!
Perhaps the most rewarding aspect of the trip was the sense of camaraderie that developed so quickly among the participants. New friendships blossomed, and teamwork among the leaders ensured everything ran smoothly. The mix of adventure, learning, and connection made the camp a truly transformative experience.
All too soon, it was time to return to Malta. But the memories of stunning landscapes, laughter-filled meals, new friendships, and the spirit of adventure will stay with the group for years to come.
