This 16th October, 2B Gallery in St Julian's unveils Thinking in Different Languages - Between Motion and Material, the first solo exhibition in Malta by London-born, Malta-based artist Madeleine Fenwick. Known for her multidisciplinary practice spanning painting, sculpture, drawing, and kinetic installation, Fenwick invites viewers into a sensory realm where motion and material converse in rhythm and resonance.

Since relocating to Malta in 2014, Fenwick has drawn inspiration from the island's industrial and maritime heritage. Her encounters with master craftsmen and engineers in the Grand Harbour profoundly shaped her understanding of materials and process. "Working with metal and discovering the wealth of knowledge within the Grand Harbour has been pivotal," she shares.
Fenwick's fascination with copper began while preparing etching plates, when she found the engraved, reflective surface more compelling than the final print. This marked
a shift in her practice - where process itself became the artwork. "Copper is ancient and futuristic, conductive and responsive. It changes with time, light, and touch," she explains.
Through copper, pewter, resin, pigment, and suspended mechanisms, Fenwick constructs works that shimmer, breathe, and resonate with unseen energy. Her pieces merge technical precision with poetic meditation, oscillating between stillness and motion, control and chance. As Dr Joanna Delia, Maltese art collector and gallery collaborator, describes: "Her practice feels alive, in constant dialogue with energy and emotion."
Fenwick's journey is both geographical and conceptual. Trained in traditional disciplines in London, she expanded her practice through residencies and collaborations across continents. In Mexico City, she learned metalsmithing techniques from local artisans, deepening her fascination with conductivity and transformation.
Her work has been exhibited internationally, including Salon ACME Edition 12 (Mexico City, 2025), Malta International Biennale (2024), Post Human II (Mexico, 2023), Ruido Blanco (Argentina, 2022), and Ruinenlust (Green Shutters Project, Malta, 2021). Each project reinforced her belief that art is a continuous act of translation - between gesture and structure, precision and intuition.
In Thinking in Different Languages, viewers are invited to pause and sense the invisible choreography of forces shaping both artwork and observer. The exhibition becomes an environment of quiet resonance, where light behaves like breath, air currents like rhythm, and metal like memory.
