The National Physical Activity for Health (HEPA) Strategy 2025-2030 has been launched. This Strategy establishes a national framework to promote physical activity at every stage of life, recognising its essential role in improving both physical and mental health.
The Strategy adopts a whole-of-government and whole-of-society approach, encouraging collaboration across various sectors such as health, education, transport, environment, and urban planning to create environments that make physical activity a natural part of daily life.
Minister for Health and Active Ageing Jo Etienne Abela stated that this HEPA Strategy is a crucial step towards promoting a more active, healthier, and sustainable society. The Strategy places equity and inclusion at its core, ensuring that every individual, regardless of age, ability, or background, can enjoy the benefits of physical activity, the government statement read.
"Through this Strategy, as well as the recently launched Non-Communicable Diseases Strategy, Malta reaffirms its commitment to encouraging more people to integrate physical activity into their daily routines, improve public health, and foster active communities that strengthen everyone's well-being," said Abela.
Meanwhile, Minister for Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation Clifton Grima stated that this Strategy is further reinforced through education and sport, with concrete initiatives such as daily physical education lessons in schools, the Let's Move Malta and #BeActive programmes, and the free gym scheme for young people initiative. He said that these measures are helping make physical activity a natural part of the daily lives of Maltese children and families, while education remains a cornerstone in building a healthy, active, and inclusive society.
