During the opening of the Startup Festival, taking place today and tomorrow at Montekristo, the Minister for the Economy, Enterprise, and Strategic Projects, Silvio Schembri, announced that an American company will be opening a studio in Malta. Wevr, a Los Angeles-based company, specialises in immersive and interactive experiences.
"This company has decided to expand into Europe and has chosen our country. This represents a clear vote of confidence in Malta's creative and digital industries. By combining Wevr's expertise with Malta's dynamic ecosystem in the fields of film, video game development, and digital media, we are continuing to create high-quality jobs, nurture local talent, and open new doors of opportunity for young entrepreneurs," said Minister Silvio Schembri.
Speaking about the Startup Festival, now in its fifth edition, Minister Schembri described it as a unique opportunity to bring together the entire startup ecosystem in Malta. "Government entities, investors, entrepreneurs, established startups, and, above all, several young people with big dreams. Dreams that can be turned into reality here, just as other startups did a few years ago. Here we see Malta Vision 2050 come to life through concepts and sectors such as AI, blockchain, green tech, medtech, data, and sustainable innovation. Through these sectors, new opportunities are being created for young Maltese and Gozitans. This Festival is a platform where Maltese ideas become future projects, and where local companies play a crucial role in strengthening Malta's competitiveness," said Minister Silvio Schembri.
The Minister emphasised that the Startup Festival remains a point of reference for all those who believe in innovation, creativity, and collaboration. It reinforces the clear message that Malta's economic future is built on the ideas of its people and the close cooperation between the public and private sectors.
Throughout this week, several events have taken place: a day dedicated to students at the Malta Aviation Museum in Ta' Qali, where young people discussed the aviation sector and the career opportunities it offers; recognition of Malta's best startups; and a series of workshops and networking sessions at the Montekristo Estate in Ħal Luqa, continuing until tomorrow.
