An elderly resident of Dar San Guzepp care home in Fgura, Joseph Perini, has died on Tuesday morning, two weeks after he was allegedly assaulted by his roommate, his wife Antonia Perini said on a Facebook post,
89-year-old Perini was reportedly brutally beaten by a person with whom he shared a room at the care home on 14 October.
In earlier Facebook posts, his wife had said she learnt that her husband had been badly injured from the blows he received in what was described as an unprovoked attack.
His wife thanked the medical staff at Mater Dei Hospital, where he was hospitalised due to his injuries, as well as family and friends who showed solidarity with their family over the alleged incident.
She said that her husband's funeral details will be shared in due time.
Antonia Perini had also filed a police report and a judicial protest in Court against Care Residence Limited and Care Residence Operation Limited for damages, through her lawyers Jose Herrera and Naomi Spiteri.
A Magisterial Inquiry is being led by Magistrate Joe Mifsud. An autopsy has also been ordered. The police are also investigating the case.
In a statement, the Ministry for Health and Active Ageing said it has been informed that an 89-year-old man passed away at Mater Dei Hospital, after being involved about two weeks ago in "an incident with another resident at a private elderly care home in Fgura".
This case has been reported to the Police, who have launched the necessary investigations.
The ministry said the relevant Government Authorities and Agencies are fully cooperating in the police investigation and magisterial inquiry "to establish the facts that led to the elderly man's death".
The ministry expressed itssincere condolences to the family of the elderly man.
