ADPD Deputy Leader Carmel Cacopardo has hinted that Madame Justice Consuelo Scerri Herrera is being considered as a possible nominee for the post of Chief Justice.
In a post entitled: 'Lobbying for a new Chief Justice?' Cacopardo notes in his blog that Chief Justice Mark Chetcuti reaches retirement age on 4 February 2026.
Cacopardo wrote that the discussion on a successor for the post of Chief Justice has started some weeks ago. "Inevitably some lobbying is already in hand."
Here Cacopardo goes on to mention Madame Justice Consuelo Scerri Herrera. Cacopardo said: "From Labour Party HQ at Mile End we hear that government is inclined to nominate Madame Justice Consuelo Scerri Herrera for the post. Coincidentally it seems that her brother former Minister José Herrera has recently been seen at the Labour Party General Conference after a long absence. It is not known whether the rumours linking José Herrera's candidature at the next election on the 1st and 10th Electoral Districts are in any way linked with his sister's possible nomination as Chief Justice. This also explains why he has recently been touring party clubs, the first time since the last general election."
"Interesting weeks lie ahead as it is most improbable that the PN parliamentary group would endorse Consuelo Scerri Herrera's nomination. Given that a two thirds approval is required for Parliament to approve the nomination, one awaits the emergence of the name of a candidate who is acceptable across the Parliamentary divide."
