A bridge constructed as part of the Msida Creek Project, and which connects the Ta’ Xbiex seafront to the other side of the marina, is set to open to the public on Sunday, Transport and Infrastructure Minister Chris Bonett said on Friday.

Bonett said that this project is one which is steadily reaching all its milestones, as he spoke of how the bridge connecting Msida, one of the first works built as part of the project, will be opening to the public on Sunday.

He said that this means cars will now make use of this bridge, and the space around the bridge will be liberated. He continued that work will then begin on the new Msida town square, which is planned to be in front of the local church. He added that testing has begun to determine how this can be done, and commented that local events such as feasts have already made use of the same space and have been a success.

“This is not simply a flyover project,” Bonett remarked, as he continued that the flyover is “just a small part” of the project. He said that the intent of the flyover has always been to improve the flow of traffic and to take cars out of Msida’s roads, which he said is a locality that has been divided in half for many years, so that work can begin to beautify the area. He commented that this area will have one of the biggest public spaces in Malta.

Bonett said that, for him, the canal is one of the paramount parts of the project, with the intent being that rainfall will go down through the canal in order to alleviate the flooding that occurs when it rains. He said that if this can be managed, then he believes this would be one of the best infrastructural projects ever carried out in Malta.

He concluded that one of the best things about this project is that it is a “project made in Malta”. He continued that the project has been done entirely by Maltese companies, and added that this makes the government very proud of the workmanship in the country.
