Jamie Camilleri, who has long admired the timeless tale, says that the story's depth and universal themes were what drew him to bring it to life on stage.

"The story behind Beauty and the Beast has always intrigued me," he explains. "Its diverse scenes give an insight into the complexities of human nature and emotions. And honestly, who doesn't wish for a happy ending?"

But staging such a beloved musical is no simple feat. Months of meticulous planning and coordination go into aligning the work of multiple departments - from costume design and lighting to choreography and props.

"I spend lots of hours going over schedules and plans as to what I have in mind," says Camilleri. "Constant communication is key. Everyone must be updated on any challenges and progress - it's truly a team effort."

That collaborative spirit is echoed by Mark Gauci, whose role as musical director is to weave together the rich harmonies and emotional power of Alan Menken's celebrated score.

"The biggest challenge is bringing together the soloists, choir, and orchestra to create the rich harmonies intended by the composer," he explains. "It's essential that these elements blend seamlessly to enhance the onstage visuals and create the intended atmosphere."

For Gauci, Beauty and the Beast offers a unique opportunity to showcase not only the timeless songs but also the immense talent behind the scenes.

"Working with such dedicated people - from the cast to the crew - is incredibly inspiring. Everyone brings something unique, and seeing their passion pushes me to give my very best."

Camilleri agrees that the energy of the cast has been a major driving force throughout rehearsals.

"Having so many performers from different disciplines is challenging," he admits. "But the enthusiasm of everyone involved - from the main performers to the backstage teams - is what keeps me going. The satisfaction from seeing it all come together is unbelievable."

From the grandeur of Be Our Guest to the tenderness of Beauty and the Beast, audiences can expect a feast for the senses. The live orchestra, Gauci adds, will elevate the entire experience.

"The live orchestra is the backbone of the musical, giving every moment depth and energy," he says. "It enhances the vocal performances, adding richness and emotion that recordings simply can't replicate."

As for what audiences can look forward to most, Camilleri prefers to keep a little mystery.

"I don't want to reveal too much - I want the audience to savour every moment," he teases. "The songs, costumes, scenery, music, makeup, hair, props, and acting will fascinate all who come to watch. This tale as old as time will truly remain in your hearts."

With such dedication behind every note, movement, and detail, Beauty and the Beast promises to be a magical experience that celebrates love, transformation, and the enduring power of storytelling.

The musical will be produced between 7 and 16 November at the Don Bosco Oratory Theatre in Gozo.
