The Ministry for Health and Active Ageing has launched the Care4Diabetes programme, a new model for diabetes management and prevention, during a national conference at Fort St. Angelo attended by medical professionals, public health experts, and representatives from across Europe.

The programme introduces a multidisciplinary approach to diabetes care, offering six months of structured support for participants. Care4Diabetes brings together doctors, dieticians, specialist nurses, and psychologists to provide guidance on nutrition, physical activity, mental health, sleep quality, and stress management.

Minister for Health and Active Ageing Jo Etienne Abela emphasised the human impact of diabetes in Malta. "When we talk about diabetes, we are not talking about statistics but about human lives, families, friends and patients who face daily challenges," he said.

The programme's first two pilot cycles in Gozo produced positive results, with participants reporting improved blood sugar control, reduced reliance on medication, weight loss, and enhanced mental well-being. Dr Abela highlighted that the programme encourages sustainable lifestyle changes, helping participants understand and adjust daily habits for long-term health benefits.

"Care4Diabetes does not offer a quick fix, but it provides the tools to change lifestyle. When a patient feels supported, their health improves - physically and emotionally. Prevention is not just a health issue, it is also a social and economic issue. Every case of diabetes prevented means less pressure on the health system and more lives saved. Together we can change the course of diabetes in Malta," concluded Abela.
