Two men were arrested shortly after committing a robbery early this morning in San Ġwann, the police said.

At around 12:30am, police received a report of a robbery at a shop in Triq Birkirkara. Preliminary investigations show that two men, armed with a sharp, pointed weapon, entered the shop and demanded money from the cashier, a 26-year-old man from Fgura. The cashier pushed a display case toward the aggressors, but one of them swung the weapon and injured the worker's hand before both men fled the scene on foot.

Police began an immediate search and soon discovered that the suspects had escaped using a vehicle that had itself been stolen earlier in Ħal Qormi.

At around 1am, during patrols in Triq in-Naxxar, San Ġwann, officers spotted the same vehicle parked with two men inside who matched the description of the alleged robbers.

A 51-year-old man from Santa Venera, who was in the driver's seat, and a 44-year-old man from Ħal Qormi were arrested. During a search, police found a knife, gloves, and various tools.

The cashier was later certified to have suffered minor injuries.

Magistrate Dr. Joseph Mifsud LL.D was informed and appointed an inquiry. Police investigations are ongoing.
