A new modern lighting system, worth €400,000, has been inaugurated at St John's Co-Cathedral.

With only 60% of the project completed, this new lighting system - as part of this project entitled "The New Light: Illuminating the Sacred" - it has been found that costs are already being reduced through its energy efficiency. This modern lighting has already reduced energy consumption by more than half of the previously existing lighting set-up.

This project is expected to reduce approximately 60 units of electricity per day, amounting to around €3,600 in cost savings. The main objective of this project is to increase this reduction to 80 units per day, for an expected annual reduction of some €8,000.

This work has led to the paintings, statues, and architectural details within the famous church to become more visible, while preserving its sacred atmosphere as a place of worship and serenity.

This new lighting system allows the Co-Cathedral illumination to be altered according to the liturgical, cultural, and educational needs.

Culture Minister Owen Bonnici said that this project reflects the government's commitment to promoting sustainability within the culture sector, while continuing to preserve and enhance the country's artistic and historical heritage.

Minister Bonnici said that this project is not just one of technological modernisation, but also another step towards ensuring that St. John's Co-Cathedral remains a cultural gem, and a jewel of art and spirituality, that inspires all who visit it.

The President of the St John's Co-Cathedral Foundation, Colonel Mark Mallia, said that "St. John's Co-Cathedral not only enhances the cultural experience, but also demonstrates a vision: that art, faith and Maltese identity should go hand in hand with progress."
