Last month I had the opportunity to attend the launch of the English version of Roma Sacra e Segreta, held at Sotto Pinsa Romana in Sliema, an event that made me feel like stepping into the heart of the Eternal City without leaving the island.
The book's original version in Italian was presented in Rome on June 21, 2025, at the historic Stadio di Domiziano underneath Piazza Navona. It had already captured imaginations with its exploration of Rome's hidden and sacred corners.
I was invited to the event by my Roman friend Fausto Soldini, who is widely recognised in Malta for his success in the restaurant scene. Initially he opened Zero Sei and Sotto Pinsa. But he now has restaurants across the island, always emphasising quality, innovation, and authenticity.
Fausto is a true role model, who has now dedicated himself to giving back, helping people with different abilities gain work experience, greening Malta with trees, and supporting artists in showcasing their work. All this without expecting anything in return. Knowing my deep connection with Rome, he invited me to this special event.
The launch was elegant and inspiring. The authors, Alessandro Alongi, Fabio Pompei, and Gabriele Scorzini, shared stories of Rome's lesser-known corners. The book invites readers, travellers, and enthusiasts to discover a different Rome, far from the conventional itineraries, where the sacred and the profane intertwine in the alleys, squares, votive shrines, and stories that have endured through the centuries.
I felt transported to the Eternal City itself. Upon learning that Maupal, the renowned street artist famously known for immortalising Pope Francis as Superman in his iconic mural near the Vatican, had illustrated the book's cover, I immediately reached out to Maupal to express my admiration and excitement. His creativity and energy are truly remarkable, and it was thrilling to connect with him, even from afar. Adding a personal touch, Fausto treated guests to his delicious Roman style pinsas paired with sparkling wine. Every bite and sip deepened the feeling of being in Rome while still in Malta.
The evening was more than a book launch; it was a celebration of generosity, culture, and passion. Fausto's warmth and vision, together with the authors' insights and Maupal's inspiring work, created lasting memories and a renewed appreciation for both the Eternal City and those who bring its spirit to life.
